Editor's Review

The walk along the St. Joseph River includes 1.3 miles of trail, providing a perfect spot for walking, biking and people watching.
Enjoying the sights and sounds of the river make the river walk a nice addition to the day in South Bend. The East Race (the popular downtown white water rafting place) is about the halfway point and a great place to rent bicycles or even StreetStriders, which are like a moving elliptical that make you feel a bit like you're cross-country skiing along the trail (you may have seen these on "The Biggest Loser"). The trail system may be low-tech, but it's user friendly, with mile markers guiding the way, even giving you an approximate number of calories burned. An expansion will take the trail to neighboring Mishawaka. Parking is easy and free. Visit the website for a map or just show up and meander, enjoying the scenery and wildlife. The pathway is maintained by the South Bend Park system.
