Bon Femme Cafe is the place to see and be seen in downtown Valparaiso. Seated in leather banquettes along the exposed-brick wall and cuddling at the intimate bar, well-heeled patrons chat and laugh over crisp Chardonnay. Bon Femme's international wine list of more than 70 choices, as well as specialty drinks, cordials and aperitifs menus, are impressive. Servers are attentive and pleasant. Ornate, silver-framed mirrors and billowing white fabric suspended from the recessed ceiling create a romantic Kasbah-esque effect. Tough the restaurant's name is French, the connection is lost on the plate. A $7 bowl of French onion soup comes smothered by a blanket of provolone cheese rather than the traditional bubble-browned Gruyere. The entrees are huge, and too heavy on the sauce, so order it on the side. The plump wild mushroom and spinach au gratin crepe's hearty woodsy flavor is better without the cream sauce ($10). We loved the light farm-fresh vegetable side dish, and the $23 grouper was sauteed to tender perfection but, unfortunately, drowned in wine sauce. Bon Femme offers many good American meat and pasta entrees. The filet medallion steak sandwich ($12), served on a crusty baguette, is tasty. Dessert choices ($3.50 to $14.95) include bread pudding, bananas Foster and cheesecake.
