Although both the warm wood dining room and brick patio are great places to sip a glass of local wine, the food here sadly misses the mark.
Little Hills Winery has two properties on St. Charles' Main Street: a wine shop and this full-service restaurant. The shop is quite fun, with a large variety of wine-related gifts and a small tasting bar. But the restaurant, though lovely to look at and a great place to linger, disappoints on the culinary side. The waitstaff aren't particularly knowledgeable about the wines they serve, and the one dish we sampled (baked Brie) was a total flop. Rather than elegantly presented in pastry, as we anticipated, it arrived melted in a pool on a plate, surrounded by out-of-season fruit and a sprinkle of toasted almonds. We were left to scoop the rapidly cooling cheese onto mediocre baguette slices and pick among the now-warm grapes that had been plopped inelegantly in the cheese. Because we visited in winter and had opted to sit outside by the lovely patio fire pits, we ordered the seasonal Alpenwine, a hot spiced wine available in either red or white. The white version was a bit odd (warm white just seems strange), but the red had nice body and a cinnamon kick. Next time, we'll stick to beverages, soak up the atmosphere and get our food somewhere else.
