Backroads Inn and Cabins charms visitors with cabins stocked with s'mores fixings.
You know you're in the West when you cross the cattle guard to pull into Backroads. We accidentally drove past it after dark -- the sign is fairly subtle, but the charm is full out. It was hands down the place we would have loved to spend a week. In five years, Marilyn and Greg Bolt have transformed a private property and former WPA gas station into a charming collection of six cabins and rooms, some of which are connected. It's conveniently located about 15 minutes outside Rapid City, but the location on the old highway to Mount Rushmore gives it an off-the-beaten-path vibe. There's a shared hot tub, heated pool and several spots to gather around campfires under the pines. We stayed in the Mountain View suite, which had a little balcony looking out into the pines and the adjoining property where there were a lot of those cool rugged Black Hills rocks and horses, too. The balcony was big enough for a gas grill and table that sat four -- awesome place to have a cup of coffee and watch the sun pop up. The kitchen was nicely set up. No stove, but there was a two-burner hot plate, rotisserie oven, microwave, and an assortment of basics such as some coffee, creamer (powder), sugar, tea, a few condiments and, best of all, s'mores fixings. The sheets, pillows and bed were all nice. Each room has its own decor and quilts. There were towels and a throw blanket for the futon, too. Rates run $129-$240/night; available April through November.
