Editor's Review

Frankenmuth's proud German heritage comes to life in this modern-day Bavarian fantasyland where the streets are clean, the people are friendly and chicken dinner is king.
Frankenmuth wears its history on its sleeve, or rather on its building facades given the faux Bavarian designs gracing everything from the post office to McDonald's. Clearly, the city takes its nickname Little Bavaria seriously. Settled by 15 German-Lutheran pioneers in 1845, their descendants have kept their German/Bavarian ancestry alive through adherence to German customs, traditions and language. Today, Frankenmuth (population: 4,900) attracts 3 million visitors a year, ranking as one of Michigan's most popular destinations. As the only two resort hotels in the area, Zehnder's and the Bavarian Inn dominate the town. Each has a large restaurant off the premises (accessible via shuttle service) featuring the world-famous chicken dinner. There are other chain lodging options as well, along with a number of shopping destinations, including the famous Bronner's Christmas Wonderland, which sells anything and everything Christmas-related. Outdoor activities such as golf and cruises on the scenic Cass River are warm-weather options. Local festivals and events include the Frankenmuth Summer Music Fest, Oktoberfest, the Frankenmuth Bavarian Festival (celebrating all things German), and the Holiday Celebration and Candlewalk.
