Named for the state highway that runs past it, this restaurant built into the Door Peninsula Winery complex opened in 2008. Enter either by passing through the winery store and tasting room or through a separate entrance from the parking lot, and you'll find a host of eating options, including wood-fired pizzas, burgers and wraps. The ambience is classy, but the vibe is pretty casual, as Bistro 42 caters largely to tourists coming in from the tasting bar next door. What you won't find is a lot of the sweet fruit wines on tap over at the winery (which are in fact its specialty). For the most part, the bistro has restricted its list to the more grapey varieties -- which, some would say, makes more sense for a nice sit-down lunch or dinner. While our waitress didn't seem too knowledgeable about the wine offerings, we managed to find a good pairing for our meal. We tried the cherry walnut stir-fry ($12), which was excellent accompanied by a Pinot Noir. The wild rice and mushroom soup ($3.25 for a cup) was tasty even though we didn't find rice in it, and the chicken Caesar wrap was up to par, too. You'll want to phone ahead to check the hours if you're planning on eating at Bistro 42, especially during the off-season. The restaurant's hours change with the seasons.
