Housed in the former St. Rosalia's Catholic church (built around 1910), the Mission Grille offers a quietly sensational experience. The space manages to maintain the reverent feel that comes from being in a place of worship, while still providing a sense of hospitality and relaxation. Many original details from the old building have been kept, while other components have been added to enhance the space: There is outdoor patio seating for the warm seasons and a garden dining room with large windows for when the weather isn't so pleasant. Food and wine are the focus. If you're in the mood for a full meal, there's a wide variety of dishes ($18-$42), such as duck breast and Alaskan king crab. All the food is prepared from scratch, using ingredients from local Door County vendors whenever it's feasible. And the wine list has won a continuous string of awards from publications like "Wine Spectator." Your server or another expert on staff can help you pair your choice of vintage with whatever you're eating. If you're in the mood to experiment, sit in the tapas area. The list is solid ($8-$15), and many of the small plates are scaled-down versions of the entrees. We ordered a few tapas and a red wine flight, and had a blast seeing which foods and wines did (and didn't) work well together. Then we ordered a white wine flight, and a few more tapas, and did the same thing all over again. Fun! Mission Grille is open for lunch and dinner daily and for brunch on Sundays, from May to October. From November to April, they're open only on weekends. The restaurant is closed the month of March. Reservations are recommended.
