Even the heartiest appetites will be satisfied with a meal at this steak house, the French Lick Resort's top restaurant. Named after the first year of the Kentucky Derby, it impresses with brighter than usual steak house decor. Large windows line the room, which overlooks a landscaped patio area. White tablecloths and oversize comfy chairs complete the scene. We started off on a good note with the baked lobster mac n' cheese appetizer ($13). It has small chunks of lobster in a cheese sauce that gets its tang from gorgonzola and white cheddar. The mushroom frites ($11) looked beautiful plied on a plate and drizzled with sauce, but tasted like what it was -- fried mushrooms. Emphasis on fried.The entrees are all enormous, flavorful dishes. We recommend splitting one between two hungry diners. The rosemary-crusted rack of lamb ($46) comes with eight (yes, eight!) large chops. The filet mignon (8 ounces/$43) was good-quality, well-seasoned beef with a lovely crust. And the 12-ounce truffled Kobe steak burger ($24) was larger than an outstretched hand and a flavorful choice. It is served on a tasty poppy seed bun and with decent fries. A slice of the decadent signature Kentucky bourbon chocolate chip pecan pie tempted us to squeeze in dessert.No matter what you order, there will be an excellent wine to pair with it. Glasses range from $6 to $40. Higher quality service would have improved our experience. The waiter brought one person the wrong entree, and we waited a frustratingly long time for a second glass of wine. However, the long-stem rose we received as we left ended the night on a romantic note.
