The brainchild of three world-traveling foodies, Columbus Food Adventures consists of guided gastronomical tours of the city. Tour options include the Short North (lots of organic goodies in Columbus' arts district), Alt Eats (a variety of ethnic fare along Cleveland Avenue) and Taco Trucks (Mexican street food on the west side). The outings are incredibly seamless and professionally conducted, not to mention delicious! Depending on the tour, you might walk or ride in a comfortable, air-conditioned van. Excursions are a little pricy (tickets start at $50), but include several hours' worth of good food and conversation.
The three-hour Taco Truck tour ($55) hits five different trucks parked near shopping centers and gas stations on the slightly gritty west side, but the great eats more than make up for the less-than-lovely scenery. Along the way, we sampled fresh melon juice, pork tacos, enchiladas and much more. (Definitely go hungry; there is a ton of food.) The food was fantastic, but what really impressed us was the overall program. Guides are chatty and informative, and the trip runs flawlessly with food prepared fresh on arrival at each location. Between stops, guides discuss the history of taco trucks in Columbus (there are more than 40!), regional varieties of Mexican food, and ingredients and cooking techniques employed at each truck. Participants rest assured that all trucks on the tour have received passing grades from the health department.
All in all, these guided adventures are a great way to experience Columbus’ vibrant food scene.
