Blow off creative steam in this suburban Cincinnati hands-on crafts studio, open to both kids and adults.
Every neighborhood needs a place where you can go to blow off some creative steam, and Madeira, a small but quaint suburb of Cincinnati, now has Creativities -- an arts and crafts studio full of space and inspiration just for creative play. The studio, located in a big rehabbed Victorian house on the city's main drag, offers both classes and open studio time every afternoon (except Sunday). Owner Christine Parker opened Creativities in the fall of 2009 after working for years on crafts programs at summer camps; she wanted a space where kids could spend time developing their creative sides and adults could play around with materials and make something in the space of a few hours. Fees are reasonable: Open studio time is $8 for two hours ($12 for kids 6 to 11) and includes access to all the tools: paints, glues, die-cutting machines, paper punches, cutters and other paper arts tools, stamps and ink pads, clay molds and tools, basic woodworking tools, leather and metal-crafting tools, and beading tools. The bill can add up once you tack on supplies (things like the paper, embellishments, clay and beads are extra), but the benefit is that you know there will be an end result -- the supplies won't just languish in a bag in the corner waiting for a rainy day. There are always adult instructors there during open studio time to show you techniques and answer questions. Downstairs, there's plenty of space for groups and individuals, including a beading bar and three large tables for working. Upstairs, there's a cozy and bright sewing studio, with classes available (it also operates as a retail fabric store -- one of the area's few independent fabric retailers). There are summer camps available for kids, and the studio can be rented for events like birthday parties, bridal/baby showers or girls' night out.
