Unusual fare, great drinks and a lively patio make Buzzard Billy's worth a visit.
We needed a late-Friday-night dining choice in Lincoln's popular Haymarket district, and Buzzard Billy's seem to fit the bill. It was an extremely hot night, and there weren't any seats available inside except at the bar, so we opted to sit outside on the covered balcony. With the help of an Electric Alligator cocktail ($6.25), featuring coconut rum, pineapple, vodka and melon, the heat became much more manageable. The menu has a wide variety of entrees, most of which you won't find anywhere else nearby. Alligator, crawfish and buffalo appear frequently on the menu, and many selections are classically Cajun. Options include chicken Creole ($12.99), red beans and rice ($8.99) or a blackened catfish po'boy ($7.49). We had a Buffalo Bill Burger ($6.99). The buffalo was drier than a hamburger, but it was still tasty and filling. The hush puppies that came with the burger were crispy outside and moist inside. We ordered the New Orleans bread pudding with brandy creme sauce ($5.29) to go. It's normally served warm, but was delicious chilled later that night. The service was pleasant and quick. We enjoyed feeling in-the-midst-of-things outside as the night cooled. Many of our fellow diners appeared to be parents dining with their college-age kids -- probably students at the nearby University of Nebraska at Lincoln. It seems like after dinner, Buzzard Billy's becomes a popular party spot.
