Some guests have been visiting Macy's (formerly Marshall Field's) on State Street for 30 or more years, making it an integral part of their holidays. Make a point to dine in the glow of the 45-foot Great Tree in the Walnut Room restaurant, view the famous holiday window displays and do a bit of shopping, and you just might find your new holiday tradition. The no-holds-barred holiday display windows are remarkable, but there's something about a towering tree gleaming with tens of thousands of lights that really lifts the spirits. Each year, a famous designer creates a custom look for the Great Tree, decorating it with themed ornaments and lights. Tuxedoed waiters snap photos of guests in their holiday best under the tree, and at tables, diners laugh, exchange gifts and raise their glasses in holiday toasts.During the holidays, the breakfast buffet includes pillowy French toast, eggs, strawberry blintzes and more. Lunch is busier. An extensive menu features 1890s Walnut Room favorites, including peach nest chicken salad mounded in woven shoestring potatoes ($10.25); flaky-crusted Mrs. Hering's Chicken Pot Pie ($11.95); a gorgonzola, butternut squash tortellacci drizzled with sage sauce ($12.95); and Frango mint chocolate ice cream pie ($4.95).The Walnut Room does not accept reservations, but you can get a pager to shop and view the decorations while you wait.
