Nelsonville is a good 35-40 minutes from Ohio's Hocking Hills, but if you skip this restaurant during your stay in this region, you're seriously missing out. Open Thursdays through Saturdays for dinner only, Rhapsody is the product of the Hocking College culinary arts program. The dining room manager oversees the students' work, and the chef in charge is a graduate, but the rest of the staff members are students, including the knowledgeable servers who can speak to flavor profiles of particular dishes. The seasonal appetizers, salads, entrees and desserts showcase high-end takes on comfort-food classics. The signature salad comes with fresh spinach, dried cherries, tomato, carrot, onion, candied walnuts and Ohio maple walnut vinaigrette ($6). Entrees include the handkerchief pasta, a dish of housemade pasta topped with smoked tomato, shrimp, mussels, bay scallops, Manchego, and cilantro ($20) and the 6-ounce beef tenderloin ($22) that comes with garlic whipped potatoes and French beans. Adventurous diners can choose a five-course chef's tasting menu (with or without wine pairings), and desserts include a warm blueberry buckle with honeybee ice cream and strawberry rhubarb shortcake made with a balsamic reduction. Through it all, a guitar player entertains (and takes requests), making this meal feel special and vacation splurge-worthy.
