Anglers can satisfy their need for walleye, and outdoor lovers can find lakeside campsites between Lake Preston and De Smet.
While you're likely to encounter weeds, algae and maybe even a pungent whiff at the height of summer, this lake is nonetheless popular with its numerous campsites, swimming beach, volleyball court, and a lakeshore supper club that's open on weekends and boasts prime rib with a view. Most of all, it's a favorite with anglers, who dress in waders and reel in walleyes without needing a boat. Like many of South Dakota's other "prairie pothole" lakes, it's also a big draw for birds, from sandpipers and white pelicans to colorful swallows that seem to perch on every park sign. Several of the campsites are on the lake with lovely views and guaranteed breezes when prairie winds blow across the water. Visitors also can reserve camper cabins overlooking the lake, but there are just a few, and they book up fast.
