Family-friendly and welcoming, this is an ideal setting for introducing children to a B&B stay during the Wilder pageant.
While it gets plenty of couples and sportsmen throughout the year, this family-friendly B&B really shines during the annual Laura Ingalls Wilder pageant. Guests gets several choices for breakfast (and can set their schedule), but what's most charming are the pancake men dressed in whipped cream and chocolate chips. Owners Jenny and Andy Todd serve them alongside a passage from "A House in the Big Woods" where Laura describes Ma's breakfast that inspired this creation. Kids love it, as well as the chance to sit in the sunny dining area with other families and learn a few grown-up lessons, like why there two forks. The spacious front porch also is favorite place to hang out between seeing the Wilder sites. Rooms vary from a cozy queen bed to a suite that sleeps a family of six. The mini fridges and microwaves are a welcome convenience. Don't be surprised if grinning girls in gingham and bonnets hop down the front steps. If it's not the guests, it could one of the Todds' four children participating in the pageant. The Todds visited Prairie House as guests about three years ago and unanimously voted to uproot from bustling New Jersey for rural South Dakota and take over the B&B. The small-town friendliness pulls you in. From $89.
