Engage all your senses for a taste of life on the prairie in De Smet at the hands-on, historic Ingalls Homestead across from the pageant grounds.
Ask any kid -- or grown-up -- what their favorite De Smet attraction is, and it's hands-down this sprawling, beautiful swath of prairie just south of the pageant site. It's a place to run free or roam among more than a dozen historic buildings, including a sod house, shanty, sod-roofed barn and prairie house. There are hands-on activities along the way. Visitors nuzzle kittens, pet a two-day old pony, help scrub and wring out laundry, play a pump organ, make a rope and drive a wagon that takes groups to the schoolhouse for a short lesson and chance to ring the bell. Anyone wanting an even more authentic experience or craving a longer dose of prairie skies and quiet can camp at the homestead or rent one of the covered wagons with bunks. It's the perfect place for watching the sunset, walking to the pageant or soaking up the stars.
