On Peoria's north, the Illinois River Scenic Byway threads north to Peoria Heights and legendary Grand View Drive, which Theodore Roosevelt called "the most beautiful drive in the world." The drive climbs into an enclave of mansions along a bluff-top park. The sweeping river vista just about lives up to Roosevelt's description. The detour loops back to Peoria Heights' business district, which lines several blocks like an invitation to linger for a while at galleries and shops and outdoor tables beside restaurants. Good stops include I Know You Like a Book with a well-stocked local section; Emerson Creek, an alley-like space packed with home accessories; and Picture This Studio and Gallery with local and regional artists works.
