Simon's is in a historic building -- an 1867 wine hall that later served as Hermann's high school -- near the Missouri River. The front, a plain redbrick with some gingerbread on the porch, disguises a friendly, local-tavern-feeling restaurant. Inside, a mix of German foods and American favorites such as steak, barbecue (the sauce is homemade) and some fish (charbroiled shrimp and catfish) populates the satisfying menu. The hot German potato salad (chunks of potatoes, celery and onions in a tangy sweet-sour sauce) is super. We tried the smoked bratwurst with kraut and a chargrilled steak and salad. Both entrees were tasty and perfectly cooked, and the steak came with a yummy coarse mustard and horseradish sauce. Owner Steve Simon is a musician, so there are often live bands on the weekends at this popular Hermann eatery. Entrees are reasonably priced at about $13 - $19.
