Although Crane's serves sandwiches and salads, guests travel from miles around for the pies that have been a local treat for over 40 years.
No visit to the Saugatuck/Douglas area is complete with a pilgrimage to Crane's Pie Pantry, which has been selling apples and related products for 40-plus years. In fall, guests cue up to pick their own apples in the seemingly endless orchards or to simply buy a supply of cider, donuts and legendary pies. The farm's restaurant is open year-round, serving a straightforward lineup of salads and sandwiches. But few people come here for a BLT or a chicken sandwich. It's all about the pies (whether that be apple, cherry, peach, pumpkin or others), strudel, donuts, cinnamon rolls, turnovers and other sweet treats baked on-site. The restaurant's dining room feels like you're having a meal in the storage room under the apple farm's barn. Wooden tables sit on concrete floors, and the walls are packed with antiques such as dolls, clothes, firearms, advertising, newspapers and more. Everybody passes through the bakery shop on the way out, and it's almost impossible not to take either a fresh slice of pie to go or grab a frozen one from the case for a future dessert.
