For about 80 years, St. Joe's Silver Beach was home to a large amusement park with bumper cars, roller coasters, water slides and a famous ballroom. That era ended in 1971, but the new Silver Beach Center is bringing back both the memories and some of the fun for a new generation. The anchor is the year-round carousel that opened in 2010. A beautiful pavilion shelters the carousel, which features elegant horses and other animals. A calliope belts out the traditional carousel band tunes, and rocking chairs around the pavilion let family members relax while the kids (and anyone else who wants a spin) take the ride. In the hall near the carousel, a compelling moving model shows what Silver Beach was like in the glory days. Music, voices and narration add to the experience of watching model rides whirl and light up inside a glass display case. The exhibit even pumps out the scent of cotton candy and popcorn to make it more real. Silver Beach Center also includes the Curious Kids Discovery Zone, which is affiliated with the famed Curious Kids Museum across the street on top of the bluff. The zone lets kids try a climbing wall, play at large water tables and tour traveling exhibits such as "Grossology: The Impolite Science of the Human Body."
