This bright and clean place calls itself The First Coffee Shop West of the Mississippi, an insider joke that alludes not to its chronology but to its location on the Hannibal street closest to the river. Coffee houses always smell good, but it's extra-good here in the morning because the muffins, scones, cookies and other goodies are baked in-house. Another plus: an interior wall of Java Jive is open to its neighbor, Fresh Ayers, an art gallery selling glass, textiles and other works by local artists.
