La Gourmandise is a quirky combination of college coffee shop and German restaurant.
La Gourmandise seems to have an identity crisis, but it's still a rather interesting little cafe and restaurant. The name is French, but the owners and much of the cuisine are German. Dinners include pork schnitzel Oskar and schweinbraten, but Asian chicken salad and a Paris-Texas panini are also on the menu. La Gourmandise is also a coffee shop. And it serves alcohol. And it hosts spoken-word open-mike events. The walls are decorated with scenes of European bistros as well as some pictures by local photographers. The tin ceiling has an uncharacteristically modern pattern stamped into the metal. When we visited, a group of people who'd just participated in the open-mike were chatting at their leisure. It seemed like the sort of place you'd encounter only near a college. We had an iced vanilla frappe, which was light, foamy and tasty.Sandwiches and wraps run about $6$8; German dinners are around $10, or $15 for a sampler.
