Butch's emphasis on quality wine is obvious from the second customers walk through the door. At the center of the restaurant’s airy dining room, wooden racks display the 700 or so bottles that owner Butch TerHaar stocks—everything from the expected California chardonnays and Australian Shiraz to Austrian Grner Veltliners and South African Pinotages. (There’s a nice selection of Michigan wines as well.)
During the day, Butch's operates as a wine shop and deli with custom-made sandwiches, soups and salads. But in the evening, the focus shifts to fine dining as the white linen tablecloths come out and customers take seats beside large plate-glass windows overlooking downtown Holland. Dinnertime menu includes lighter meals, drinks and dessert. A pleasant outdoor patio opens during warm weather.
Dinner fare makes good use of local produce and meats wherever possible. Expect entrees ranging from grilled chicken with cherry sauce to cedar plank salmon and mushroom-and-cheese-stuffed ravioli. Most entrees cost about $25. You can also select a bottle from Butch's wine racks for retail price plus a $10 corkage fee.
