It's hard to imagine a more humble eatery than Pronto Pups, ocated in a yellow stand on the Grand Haven boardwalk. Yet this tiny establishment has become a beloved local dining institution, satisfying cravings for corn dogs since 1947. Corn dogs and Coke products are the only items you can get. Composed of Michigan-made frankfurters dipped in a secret-recipe batter and deep-fried in vegetable oil, these corn dogs taste good, either naked or with ketchup and mustard.
Be aware, the owners are sticklers about the ordering procedure, probably to help keep those long lines moving. Tell the attendant how many corn dogs you want (they’re $1.75 apiece), pay for your food, then wait patiently until your dogs are ready. Only then will you be asked if you want ketchup or mustard, don’t try to jump the gun and request it sooner. Follow tradition by hopping back in line for seconds.
Pronto Pups is open daily from May through September and holds an annual fund-raiser during the third weekend of January to whet appetites for the upcoming season.
