Tucked away on the wooded shores of Lake Thompson, Holiday Acres offers a classic Wisconsin North Woods resort experience. Whether you kick back at the pool, hike a nature trail, or go geocaching or fishing, you can't escape the warm, relaxed feeling here. Since 1949, the Zambon family has offered great accommodations, meals and entertainment. Specialty guest rooms in the rustic lodge have fireplaces or whirlpools. Cottages have a fireplace, screen porch and aluminum boat. Larger vacation homes are also available. The Friday night buffet ($11.95) and Sunday North Woods country breakfast ($8.95) at the resort's Three Coins Restaurant are area favorites. It's not unusual to see deer grazing outside the dining room's wall of windows. Signature dishes include chef Tom's pork Athena and chicken wild mushroom ravioli. Prices range from $16.95 to $27.95. Decadent desserts are the grasshopper pie and Texas hot fudge sundae ($4.95). Historic displays show off jazz greats who have played at Holiday Acres. Special Mother's Day and Thanksgiving Weekends of Jazz and evening concerts at its jazz camp in May are added treats. The Turn of the Century gift shop is filled with creative natural-fiber women's clothing, along with international gifts and accessories.
