Locals in South Haven know that this is the best spot in town for ice cream on a summer night.
You know as soon as you drive up that you've passed the reach of the super cute downtown in South Haven, and even if you're a tourist, you're glad. A green cow on the roof gazes out over the kids fresh off the ball fields and the families willing to take a number and crowd into the tiny dining room of this vintage brown-brick soda fountain just east of the Walmart. Newbies to Sherman's may get a few minutes to read the menu, but you won't be able to get close enough to the ice cream cases to check out the dozens of options until it's your turn to order. It's packed in there. What you get isn't fancy -- our s'mores sundae made with Chocomania ice cream, hot fudge, marshmallow creme and crumbled graham crackers dripped all over the counter before we could dig in -- but it's cheap ($3.75) and could easily feed three. Locals know that a single-scoop cone ($2.99) looks more like a double, so if you don't want to overindulge, ask for a "baby scoop," which is $2.60. Single-scoop waffle cones are $3.99. And how many places nowadays have fresh coffee brewing and clean mugs ready for you to grab and enjoy, gratis? Sherman's does, so pour a cuppa and enjoy.
