Head to this retro drive-in, where you'll be served great food -- and even greater root beer -- by a friendly carhop.
Lakeview Drive Inn is exactly the kind of place you hope to find when you're traveling. Established in 1938, it is Winona's oldest restaurant and occupies a choice spot near scenic Lake Winona and offers views of Sugar Loaf Bluff in the background. Its menu contains all of the American favorites, including burgers, hot dogs, fries and malts. Prices are reasonable. And the food is brought out to you by friendly carhops.Even better, the food's actually pretty darn good -- something you can't always count on when you're talking fast food. The burgers are juicy and tasty (especially the popular elk and buffalo burgers); the sweet potato fries are delicious; and the homemade root beer, served in frosted mugs, are worth every calorie. (Although they do home-brew a diet root beer as well, both using the original recipe.)If you don't want to eat in your car, picnic tables are scattered about. Kids stay entertained with the playground equipment out back. And if you want to eat inside, there are even a few stools at the small counter. And it gets even better. Lakeview holds classic-car cruises every week during the summer, with at least 100 cars at each event. For the techies, there's free Wi-Fi. It'd be pretty hard to top this. So drive in, roll down your window and place your order.
