Located on the edge of the artsy Crossroads District, the Blue Bird Bistro has a bright blue facade with a yellow doorway. Inside, the 100-year-old building, which has been a grocery, a church and a barber shop in previous lives, has brightly polished wood, tile floors and a tin ceiling (unfortunately the acoustics lead to a sometimes noisy dining room).The Blue Bird serves only organic, sustainable foods, relying on local suppliers for ingredients. In fact, the restaurant grows some of its veggies and herbs across the street. We've visited for breakfast and dinner and enjoyed both. (Breakfast prices run around $10; dinner about $18). Our favorite breakfast dish was ciabatta French toast, a crispy twist on a breakfast classic. At dinner, we enjoyed both a hummus and spinach salad, topped with Granny Smith apples and pecans, and an organic risotto with broccoli, tomatoes and portobellos. The wholesome, veggie-laden menu is a welcome complement to all of the Kansas City BBQ. The Blue Bird Bistro also offers a Hard Day's Night menu with eight entrees for $8 every day except Sunday. The choices range from soup and salad combos to shepherd's pie and pizza. A Farmer's Table is offered monthly: For $45 guests get a five-course meal prepared with food from a single local farmer. The farmer is present at the dinner.
