Anyone who spends much time in KC knows that beauty is in the eye of the beholder when it comes to BBQ. Ask around, and it starts to sound like everyone in town has a different favorite BBQ restaurant, often choosing one for its brisket, another for its burnt ends and so on. But Arthur Bryant's lands near the top of almost everyone's list. Arthur Bryant's invented burnt ends. A KC original, the burnt ends are the crunchy, burnt pieces of brisket that BBQ restaurants used to shave off before serving. Arthur Bryant's originally gave their burnt ends away for free. Eventually the meat bits developed a following, and now every respectable KC BBQ place sells them. Located in the traditionally African American neighborhood centered on 17th and Vine, this BBQ place takes orders cafeteria style. Just wait in line -- alongside patrons of every ethnicity and income level -- and then take your paper plate spilling over with barbecued meat, Wonder Bread and French fries fried in lard to a cheap table and dig in. Entrees cost $10-13 including fries; sides like potato salad or baked beans will add $2.50 to your dinner cost.Arthur Bryant's has two other locations in Kansas City, one at the Ameristar Casino and one at Legends at the Kansas Speedway.
