In spite of its awful-sounding name, Randy's Roadkill actually dishes up some terrific BBQ. The restaurant opened in September 2009 in the hilly countryside outside Rolla. A gray pole barn-style building, Randy's only had a flimsy, temporary plastic sign identifying itself when we visited in April 2010. (Randy just hadn't gotten around to it yet.) Inside, it's bright and attractive, paneled with pale oak, decorated with beer signs and mounted deer heads. There's also a pleasant full bar. And if you get a chance to visit with owner Randy, take it. He loves to talk about his restaurant and anything else on his mind. Entrees cost $10-12 and include barbecue favorites: Ribs, smoked sausage, chicken, burnt ends and pulled pork sandwiches, as well as combination plates, with more than one type of meat. Sides include fries, potato salad, coleslaw, baked beans, corn -- standard BBQ fare. A lot of visitors begin with an appetizer: the loaded chips. It's a plate of homemade potato chips covered with baked beans, shredded beef brisket, cheese and BBQ sauce. A heart attack on a plate? Maybe. But it is good.
