It's not fancy and it can get crowded, but Stella's Bar and Grill is a great spot to find a delicious, if greasy, burger.
Heading into Stella's Bar and Grill, you know you're going to eat something bad for you, so sit back and enjoy the greasy deliciousness. The reputation of the world-famous Stella Burgers is widespread, so the 50 indoor seats fill quickly at lunchtime. Arrive a bit before or after traditional lunch breaks or you may find yourself in the standing-room-only entry watching hawklike for an open table. Fresh, 6.5-ounce ground beef burgers are hand-pressed and cooked to order on a cast-iron grill. Interesting add-ons include fried eggs, jalapenos and peanut butter. Burgers come on paper napkins, with fries or onion rings on the side -- be sure to grab a few extra to better wipe away the fresh-from-the-fryer evidence. We had a World-Famous Stella Burger with American cheese ($4.75), which came with the standard lettuce, tomato, pickles, onion and mayo. We also tried the Southwest Burger ($5.75), topped with BBQ sauce, Swiss cheese, American cheese and two onion rings. Both were cooked to our specifications and served hot just 10 minutes after we ordered. We loved the sweet BBQ sauce on the Southwest Burger and the generous portions of fries and onion rings. While Stella's two flat-screen televisions are big enough to provide the feel of a sports bar, the restaurant is bright and clean enough to feel like a friendly diner. If you want to imbibe, there are more than 40 varieties of bottled and canned beer to choose from. Many customers are Bellevue locals and airmen from nearby Offutt Air Force Base. But you'll run into people from all over the metro area because the burgers are destination-worthy and the location is only a 10-minute drive from downtown Omaha.
