A budget hotel that claims to be historical, but is really a little dated
The Dodge House Hotel's website talks a lot about its history. It claims to be "one of the first buildings built in Dodge City" and that "Doc" Holliday ran his dental practice out of Room 24. What the site doesn't mention is that all vestiges of that history were replaced decades ago by a facility more akin to a 1970s Holiday Inn. The hotel centers around a central enclosed space -- the kind once marketed as a "Holidome." The two-story carpeted area (which guest rooms open onto) includes a small pool, bar, arcade, rudimentary fitness center, basketball hoop and volleyball court. The two sports courts are right outside of rooms, so keep your eyes open for flying balls if games are in-progress. An attached restaurant offers free breakfast consisting of scrambled eggs, hash browns and fairly rubbery pancakes. The rooms are basic and serviceable, with amenities most of us now expect in even basic hotels: fridge, microwave, hair dryer, ironing board. The room we stayed in could use some updating. Paint was peeling in places, the sink faucet leaked water onto the countertop and there's a hint of mustiness in the air. The Dodge House offers one of the most affordable rooms in town, but if you're looking for more updated accommodations, you'll find newer chain hotels down the street.
