We regularly travel to Duluth and stay in a family-friendly hotel in Canal Park, so it was a treat to settle into this Arts and Crafts-style dream that's perfect for couples on a weekend getaway. Burgundy leather sofas and chairs, stained-glass windows, cherrywood, leaded glass, a huge stone fireplace and stone columns all give the lobby warm, sophisticated flair. Huge windows lining the back wall let in views of Lake Superior, and guests can enjoy it from easy chairs indoors or at the wrought-iron tables and chairs on the back patio. Our room had two queens with a private balcony overlooking the lake. The room was spacious and plush, with high-thread-count linens, a 32-inch LCD TV, free Wi-Fi and a decent-size bath. Rates start at $189 a night during high season and includes a hot breakfast in the lobby. Breakfast featured eggs, sausage, Belgian waffles, bagels, muffins, doughnuts, cereals, yogurt and fresh fruit, plus Caribou Coffee. Guests can use an on-the-small side exercise room on the second floor and an on-the-small-side indoor pool on the first floor. But most visitors here get their exercise out on the 4.2-mile lakewalk running behind the hotel. Why wouldn't you? The only point we think Canal Park Lodge could improve on is its front desk staff. While relatively friendly, the staffers we encountered didn't make eye contact, call us by name or seem glad that we chose their property to stay there. We wouldn't have minded a little appreciation thrown our way!
