Stillwater is known for its antiques, rare, and used bookstores, but if you're looking for new titles the Valley Bookseller is a first-rate independent bookshop offering fiction, nonfiction, children's books, works by local authors and an array of magazines. The inventory is immense in a way often reserved for big-box stores, but deliberate in that unique and beloved indy bookshop way. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and engaged, with dozens of featured book group meetings, plentiful staff picks, regular author signings and a website chock-full of useful information on awards and bestseller news. It's large, bright and sunny, with a family of finches housed at the front of the store and a friendly, drop-right-in Main Street location.
