Want Chicago's lakefront without the hassle of crowds and parking at big beaches? Try the Jarvis Park and Loyola Park beaches in Rogers Park.
Visitors to Chicago often head to the beaches at Oak Street, North Avenue and Montrose Harbor to get a taste of Lake Michigan. But often overlooked are the lesser-known sandy shores of Jarvis Park and Loyola Park, which are equally beautiful, less crowded and far easier to get to, especially if you don't have access to a car or want to leave it at home. Both are located in the Rogers Park neighborhood, just a block east of Sheridan Road. Chicago buses will drop you at both (one line goes to and from downtown Chicago), and the el's Red Line is a couple of blocks away. There is also some limited metered parking maybe 20 or so spots at Jarvis Park and about 50 at Loyola Park.Jarvis is the smaller of the two, tucked away behind a block of houses and apartment buildings. Loyola is larger, and includes a concession stand that's open in the summer and a playground area for children. There is no cost to use either beach, and dogs are welcome as long as they're leashed.
