Burgers and beer go gourmet at a casual-cool bar just south of downtown.
Located just outside Milwaukee's hip Third Ward neighborhood and playing a soundtrack of semiretro pop hits, Stack'd attracts young professionals who want to eat junk food and feel cool doing it. Start with the beer list. About half of the 50-some choices are Wisconsin craft brews. As for the burgers, you can build your own, but it's more fun to try the specialty concoctions, all priced around $11. The Hangover Stack is a messy melange of fried egg, cheddar, bacon and fried onions on a grass-fed beef burger, and the German Stack tops a spicy jalapeno and blue cheese brat patty with tangy sauerkraut and stone-ground mustard. (Pack breath mints or order a spiked grasshopper milkshake for dessert.) Be sure to pick the pretzel roll as your bread option; dense and chewy, it's substantial enough to support all those toppings. Not all the sides and appetizers are worth the calories -- cold fries were a disappointment -- but Harry's Fried Potent Pickle Coins are a salty, greasy revelation, crisp-golden and dunked in spicy ranch dip. Paging cardio.
