Wings Over Alma is a combination educational nature center and arts/crafts gallery. The staff is extremely knowledgeable about area birding. They can give visitors a sense of what's been sighted lately and good areas for observation. The center itself is an excellent place to start: it has a 50-foot viewing deck overlooking the Mississippi and Lock and Dam No. 4, frequented by eagles and a variety of waterfowl. It's currently raising funds to install an eagle-viewing camera that will offer a live look on its website. The gallery portion of the center hosts revolving exhibitions from artists and photographers, usually with a nature or historic theme. A recent exhibit featured 19th-century photographs of the river valley by Gerhard Gesell.
