One of three Ghyslain Chocolatier locations in Indiana, this chic dessert shop and restaurant is a delight.
Open since 2008, this chic pastry shop and restaurant in Richmond's Historic Depot District is one of three in Indiana (and one in Louisville, KY as of 2011) run by Quebec native Ghyslain Maurais. The exquisitely beautiful chocolates and pastries sold here are trucked in daily from the Ghyslain Chocolatier, 35 miles away in Union City. They're definitely the main draw, but the French- and Italian-inspired savory fare is delicious, too. (The sweet potato salad with red peppers and cilantro is especially good.) Ghyslain is in a tempting location, next to a stylish clothing shop and candle, kitchen and gourmet food stores. It's also a stop on the Wayne County Chocolate Trail, for good reason. These are some of the most gorgeous pieces of candy we've seen stunning hand-painted butterflies, seashells, horseshoes and other little shapes. The turtles are noteworthy; they're kind of a new-wave spin on traditional caramel-nut-chocolate turtles and shaped like real little turtles. The milk chocolate shells are hand-painted; each color signifies a different caramel-nut combination. Pastries are $4.50 to $5.50 each, candies $1.50 each. Ghyslain Chocolatier serves lunch daily, as well as dinner on Fridays and Saturdays only (closed Mondays). The dinner choices change each weekend, but the selection always includes meat, fish, vegetarian and chicken dishes. The charcuterie platter stands out among the starters. Lunch runs $9-$12; dinner $15-$25.
