Editor's Review

This bed-and-breakfast is a charming getaway with a century-old Adirondack-camp feel.

The fire-engine red, vintage Chevy truck parked in the circle drive tells you this lodging has a sense of aesthetics unmatched in Hayward. The lodge, built in the 1920s, authentically mimics the style of century-old New York Adirondack camps. The log construction, stonework and long low roofline aren't kitschy knockoffs. It's the real deal, inside and out. Now run as a bed-and-breakfast, the lodge is beautifully furnished in rustic but luxurious style. The B&B offers seven rooms, plus tasteful public dining and relaxing areas. Gorgeous views of Spider Lake and access to the docks remind you why the location is part of the charm. Nearby cabins were once part of the compound, but are now privately owned. Ultracharming, this is a wonderful getaway spot for adults. Children over 12 are also welcome, but it's a sophisticated retreat meant for grown-ups. If you're in Hayward for the nature and get-away-from-it-all vibe, this place is a wonderful alternative to family- and fishing-friendly cabins. The lodge is located about 20 miles north and east of Hayward, and the last 6 miles are on a twisty road that makes you wonder whether you'll ever get to there. It's worth the trip.
