This 1885 home pays tribute to the first governor of South Dakota.
Mellette House is off in the northwest corner of Watertown, surrounded by less historic homes, making it a little hard to find. Arthur Mellette, the last governor of the Dakota Territory and the first governor of South Dakota, raised his family in this house. Early on, Mellette did much of the state's business here, even though Pierre was designated as the state capital. The restored home houses furnishings, clothing and other items from the Mellette family. Tours are free, but the home is open only four hours in the afternoon Tuesday through Sunday, and closes for the winter, so plan ahead if you want to visit.
