Midwest Living Recommends
Focusing on farm-to-table comfort foods, FarmBloomington has quickly developed a loyal foodie following -- and a growing rep as one of Indiana's best restaurants.
Since it opened in 2007, FarmBloomington has quickly amassed a loyal foodie following. Chef-owner Daniel Orr, a local with years of international culinary experience, focuses his menu on seasonal farm-to-table comfort foods, offering meat-and-potatoes meals with modern, light twists. The restaurant uses ingredients from more than 25 local producers, and it is fast developing a reputation as one of the best restaurants in the state -- and perhaps the Midwest. At breakfast or brunch, start your meal with the restaurant's fourth-generation drop biscuits, served with Orr's own spiced apple butter. Next, opt for a simple platter of fresh fruit drizzled in lavender syrup, or splurge on the decadent Hoosier Benedict, a happy marriage of eggs Benedict and biscuits and gravy. At lunch, settle into the cozy cafe for light soups, salads and sandwiches. Afterward, browse the Farm market, where you'll find a wide selection of locally made products, including Orr's own spice blends, sauces, dips and oils. At dinner, try a thin-crust "farm pie" pizza or one of the decadent main entrees, such as rosemary chicken and confit thigh, baby back ribs, or honey-and-miso-glazed salmon. Whatever you order, be sure to start the meal with the fantastic garlic fries, served in a big bowl and topped with parmesan cheese and spicy chili flakes. Need a night out? Head to the Farm bar for tapas and a wide selection of Indiana microbrews, or visit the basement Root Cellar for good food and live music on weekend evenings. In a college town dominated by loud, crowded bars, the Root Cellar is a more laid-back, grown-up alternative. Breakfasts cost less than $10, as do most lunch offerings. Expect to spend around $25 for dinner entrees. With so many delicious offerings and such a strong commitment to farm-to-table dining, FarmBloomington is a can't-miss Indiana foodie destination. It's an hour's drive from Indianapolis, but it's worth every minute.
