Midwest Living Recommends
Families give a thumbs-up to this North Woods-theme, weatherproof destination resort.
Kids--grownups too--get a big, wet kick out of the 49,000-square-foot indoor water park, the keystone to Great Wolf's wild popularity (there are seven in the Midwest alone). Waterslides, including the thrilling Triple Twist (a five-story waterslide with three vortex funnels) wind throughout the park. Families float on the lazy river, and younger kids splash in areas created especially for them. Every few minutes, the giant soaker bucket on top of the four-story treehouse water fort tips 1,000 gallons onto the gleeful group below. You have to dry off sometime, so Great Wolf is packed with other activities that rate high for kids: arcade, evening story time, T-shirt-making and more. There's even the Scoops Kid Spa, where guests age 412 don pink robes and fluffy tiaras to receive a Chocolate Covered Cherry Facial or ice-cream-theme mani/pedi while sitting on a bench shaped like a banana split. For adults, the Elements Spa Salon offers facials, manis/pedis and massage. Restaurants such as the Camp Critter Bar and Grille are clearly geared for families, with menus that feature kid favorites and flavorful entrees for grown-ups. You can even dine poolside if you just can't tear yourself away from the water. All suites include water park passes, mini fridge and microwave. Some are themed, with a separate area with bunk beds and TV for the kids, gas fireplace, loft or whirlpool. Check their website for frequent packages and deals. 281 suites, from $269.
