Nestled into the woods within Door County's Peninsula State Park, this theater makes an idyllic setting for feel-good performances. The American Folklore Theatre troupe produces original musical comedies full of homespun humor and references to Wisconsin culture. Recent shows have included Life on the Mississippi and Cheeseheads, The Musical.
The atmosphere is fun and relaxed, not at all stuffy—guests could come straight from their park campsites and feel perfectly comfortable here. A wood-chip path leads to the open-air venue, an elevated stage and rows of wooden benches. (Seats do have backrests, but are hard and can get uncomfortable. Best to bring a cushion.) The place is usually packed with enthusiastic audiences, and a live band plays festive country swing and Cajun music before the shows begin. This down-home entertainment, coupled with the atmosphere, makes American Folklore Theatre a great way to spend a summer evening in Door County. Adult tickets are $19, teens $9, kids ages 3 to 12 $5.50, children under age 3 get in free.
