Located just west of Vermillion, South Dakota's first vineyard offers a tasting room for sipping an array of South Dakota-made wines, tours by appointment and a cozy B&B. Valiant Vineyards' tasting room is a small affair: The tasting bar seats up to three guests. When we arrived, the bar was already full, but the bartender managed to tuck us in at the end of the bar. Wine tastings are free for the first three samples, then guests pay or purchase a bottle. We found Full Throttle, a dry red wine, to be rich in color and taste, a nice surprise for a Midwestern wine. The semisweet Rushmore White had a crisp clarity. We lingered over Rushmore Red, which offered a hint of cinnamon. After the tasting, purchase a bottle and enjoy it out on the vineyard's porch. B&B guest rooms were spacious and focused on pampering the guests with everything from plush beds to cotton robes. Even the in-room coffeemakers had ceramic cups (not paper!), a small touch that we appreciated. Bottles of wine range from $8.95 for their Sweet White to $19.95 for Sturgis Merlot 2010. Winery tours are available by appointment. B&B rooms start at $95.
