Admission is free; tours cost $2.
It's free to check out this tourist center, but you'll really want to go for the walking tour, an inexpensive way to see Nauvoo's highlights.
A walking tour is the main attraction at this tourist center, run by the Community of Christ, an offshoot of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The tour, which costs $3, involves walking three or four blocks and lasts about an hour and 15 minutes. You'll have to watch a short film first, which you may find slightly more balanced than the materials over at the Historic Nauvoo Visitors' Center. (For example, it makes mention of the plural-marriage controversy that is indisputably a big part of church founder Smith's story.) The tour takes you through several sites: Nauvoo House, the Joseph Smith homestead, the Smith family cemetery, the Mansion House and the Red Brick Store, which are among the most significant in town. As such, it's a don't-miss experience for anyone wanting an overview of Nauvoo. The Red Brick Store is a completely new re-creation of Smith's old store, with a gift shop that sells a fun array of quaint objects, like old-fashioned games, as well as root beer and other refreshments.
