Coquette Cafe

Editor's Review
Need to celebrate a romantic anniversary or impress someone on a first date? Either way, this French-bistro-style restaurant, nestled in one of the myriad landmark buildings in Milwaukee's Historic Third Ward neighborhood, should be on your list. (It would also make a perfectly lovely spot for a dinner with friends.) The ambience is sophisticated but not off-putting, service is warm and impeccable, and the cuisine is, simply put, to die for--and at prices that, although not inexpensive, are far from astronomical. Specialties worth trying include the pannequets aux crevettes (a crispy packet of shrimp and potatoes on a bed of paprika sherry mushrooms), the ctes du porc entre (a grilled pork chop with mustard spaetzle, julienned and pickled, and a grainy mustard sauce--truly a unique but accessible taste) and the praline nougat glace (a frozen mousse with caramel crisscrossed across the top). Entres start at about $18. And make sure to try the house beer, made specially for the caf by a local brewer.
