Zingerman's Deli is the wellspring for the empire that is now Zingerman's Community of Businesses. Launched in 1982 by the now-famous duo of Paul Saginaw and Ari Weinzweig, it is a one-stop shop for a huge array of meats (including a large selection of bacon), more than 300 varieties of cheese, homemade chopped liver, knishes, stuffed figs, 75 types of olive oil, fresh baked goods and endless shelves of gourmet vinegars, mustards, jams and other foodstuffs. Products are pricey here, no doubt about it, but you're getting top quality as well as service from a staff that's friendly and knows what they're talking about when it comes to the merchandise sold. Across the way, you'll find Zingerman's Next Door, which is a coffee/pastry/sandwich shop serving all of the products that bear the Zingerman name--coffee, cheese, baked goods, candy, ice cream and so on. It's a comfy spot to read the paper in the morning while breakfasting on a homemade scone or muffin, to grab a quick midday sandwich or to stop for a pick-me-up in the afternoon. Make no mistake. We love Zingerman's.But we also love how the Zingerman's rallying cry--quality, quality, quality--has galvanized the food scene in Ann Arbor. The Kerrytown location may make for tough parking on busy Saturdays (especially when the University of Michigan Wolverines are playing), but it's an easy walk from the main downtown shopping district and the U of M campus.
