Function and fashion meet at this country pottery barn.
Perched on a steep hillside, surrounded by Amish farms, Holmes County Pottery is not a typical tourist destination. And that's just one of the reasons we love this shop. Artist Cary Hulin lives and works at this artisan gallery where function and fashion come to life in his masterpieces. The vast choices range from birdhouses and planters to dinnerware and vases to baking pans and casserole dishes. The one thing they all have in common: They're beautiful as well as usable. Each piece of wood-fired pottery is handcrafted by Hulin himself and finished in a Korean-style Anagama kiln that he also built. Prices range from $8 for a small cup to $150 for a lamp, with most in the affordable $50 range. The studio and showroom are spotless, neat, and well-organized, and the pottery is displayed on plain wooden shelves also built by the artist. Hulin is genuinely passionate about his pottery and is more than happy to chat with visitors, making this out-of-the-way shop a great opportunity to visit with (and buy directly from) a true craftsman.
