Good food and good jazz are on the menu at this restaurant and lounge in the Allerton Hotel on Chicago's Magnificent Mile.
With a name reflecting its convenient location right on Michigan Avenue, this restaurant serves breakfast and lunch primarily to guests of the Allerton Hotel. Its lunch menu seems like a good fit for the business crowd, with an ample selection of soups, sandwiches and salads. The curried white bean soup ($8) is kicky and unique, with crispy prosciutto and sweet and sour apples on top. The portobello panini ($12 with thick-cut fries) comes layered with baby spinach, tomato and red onion melded with melted, smoked Gouda. Flavors are perhaps a bit too subtle--a pinch of salt or dash of garlic aioli would be a welcome addition. Entrees include turkey pot pie, seared yellowfin tuna and pan-seared tofu with citrus sauce. Prices range from $15 for risotto with seasonal mushrooms to $34 for filet mignon. Like the hotel, the decor of M Avenue is cool and contemporary. The restaurant flows into the adjacent cocktail lounge, just off the hotel lobby. Large velvet curtains can be drawn to separate the two visually, but when the bar gets boisterous, the sounds will definitely spill into the dining room. This isn't necessarily a bad thing: On Wednesday and Saturday nights, the lounge hosts jazz singer Erin McGold, a popular draw in a city known for great jazz.
