Midwest Living Recommends
Vast views and good local wine make this a must-stop for winery lovers.
The wines at Rocky Waters are pretty good, but it's the views that make this vineyard worth the trip. The building is best described as a log mansion, with an impressive wraparound deck constructed around an aged tree or two. It all overlooks the vineyard, which sits on 112 acres, including 25 acres planted in grapes, plus a small lake. The wines are all made from single-variety grapes grown on the estate, including Marechal Foch, Leon, Millot and St. Croix. They had a Midwestern taste; we enjoyed the two reds, Tower Red ($22) and Wild Turkey Blush ($12). The gift shop and tasting room are small, but you really want to be outside with the lovely views of the countryside anyway. The winery is open seven days a week and features live music on Sundays. If you end up falling in love with the view, consider renting the private guesthouse. Located on the 5-acre lake, the cabin features three bedrooms, three bathrooms and a private beach ($300 to $450).
